It's a sad week for myself and my family. My awesome grandfather has passed away. I'm going to miss him very much.






TALBERT DUTY

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — Talbert Raymond Duty, 87, of Airport Road of Chapmanville, formerly of Ragland, crossed over Jordon Sunday, November 29, 2009, following a brief illness.

Born in Logan County, he was a son of the late Charles Wilson and Mary Diamond Duty. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Gladys Browning Duty; three sons-in-law, Donald M. “Bud” McNeal, Charles Hugh Madden and Fred Elkins; four brothers, Roy, Ernest, George and Thurman Duty, and two brothers-in-law, Herbert Farley Sr. and Elliott Ray Burke.

Mr. Duty was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army as a heavy machine gunner at the young age of 16. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Germany, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge as well as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart as he was wounded in Northern France, during the Normandy Invasion of June 6, 1944. He worked as a coal miner for more than 30 years, was a member of the UMWA Local 8752 and retired from Kelly No. 5 Mine at Blair. He loved gardening, reading and telling stories of days past to his family and friends. Because of the war, his most cherished honor was receiving was his high school diploma in 2003.

Survivors include his second wife, Lilly Lou Floyd Baisden Duty; his children with Gladys: one son, Raymond (Anita) Duty of Delbarton, and three daughters, Rosa Lea McNeal of Charleston, Joyce Elkins (companion Charles Patterson) of Lakeland, Fla., and Carol Lynn (Stewart) Hall of Catlett, Va.; one brother, C.W. (Kay) Duty of Wapakoneta, Ohio; seven sisters, Ruth (Jack) Shannon of Lakeland, Ruby Farley of McCarr, Ky., Roberta Duty and Pat Smith, both of Columbus, Ohio, Margie (Ira R.L.) Farley of Hardy, Ky., Belva Burke of Defiance, Ohio, and Corena Stabnau of Wyandotte, Mich.; grandchildren, Robert Eugene (Julie) Elkins, Stephanie Tomblin, Antha Renee Kinser, Beth (David) Boggess, Carla (Matthew )Wilburn, Christopher Madden, Jonathan (Joyce) Barath, Christy Chenoweth, Thomas (Tony) Sloan, Dustin (Tabetha) Sloan, and Larry (Barbara) Browning; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many extraordinary nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his children and all who knew him. A special thanks to his caregiver, Donna Lilly.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, at the Honaker Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill with Military Graveside Rites.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
